The White Tiger of Mount Merapi is seen as a mythical figure and protective spirit, believed by locals to embody those lost to volcanic eruptions—souls transformed into guardians for the villages beneath the volcano. Further research revealed that Siluman is a figure with a fluid identity, understood and interpreted differently across local communities. Its form and behavior vary from village to village, reflecting diverse cultural perspectives. The hidden history and fluidity of interpretation sparked a deep interest. The interpretation focuses on the fluidity of collective memory, the Siluman myth, and the intersection of myth and geography. The work explores how this myth arises from people's longing to connect with the past and what has passed away. Additionally, it investigates how collective memory can be transformed into a figure or object. The use of this heritage craft deliberately contrasts with contemporary notions of the digital “face”: our carefully curated online identities and social personas. The outer shell, made from discarded masks, symbolizes “face” (面子), a concept deeply embedded in East Asian societies, where maintaining dignity, reputation, and social image often overrides emotional authenticity. Historically designed to shield fragile candle flames from wind and weather, the lantern becomes a metaphor for how society trains us to protect and present a polished image. Inside, the light represents the self: our soul, vulnerability, and individuality, quietly glowing beneath layers of expectation. The title, “I’m fine, thank you, and you?”, refers to a textbook English phrase taught to many non-native speakers, a reflexive, surface-level response devoid of real emotion. It echoes the social scripts we absorb from an early age: how to save face, rather than how to be honest. Blending themes of beauty culture, aging anxiety, and performative identity, the work invites reflection on how public personas are constructed and upheld. It critiques the pressure to appear “fine” and youthful, even when we are not. The title, 10593, denotes the number of days lived at the time of the artwork’s initial exhibition, embodying a personal measure of time within a larger context. In nature, the formation of stalactites unfolds over centuries, with growth nearly imperceptible—approximately 1 millimeter every ten years. Such a time span extends far beyond the average human lifetime, rendering the natural creation of stalactites impossible within a single lifespan. The perception of this duration as long or short, however, is shaped not solely by units of measurement but by individual interpretations of time itself. Against the vast scale of geological processes, this span might appear brief, yet it signifies an entire lived experience, embodying continuity and a unique personal journey. This sparked an interest in exploring cultural customs and perceptions, particularly the question of why Thailand, despite never being colonized, adopted utensils that seemed out of place with its local cuisine. This inquiry led to a deeper examination of Thailand’s post-colonial influences and the reasons behind the king’s embrace of Westernized habits, revealing how imperialist history continues to shape everyday life. Inspired by the architectural symbol of the pagoda—a tiered tower commonly found in Asian countries with religious significance—the creative journey began to incorporate rice, a staple of East Asian culture, into the narrative. Pagodas, historically sacred spaces housing Buddhist or Taoist artifacts and scriptures, have played an integral role in the spiritual life of their communities. In the final artwork, the significance of rice is highlighted as a fundamental element shaping the landscape, economy, and people of East Asian nations. Until the mid-19th century, most clothing was custom-made by hand, either by ourselves or by professional tailors, often taking weeks or months to complete. Clothing was once a spiritual sustenance, passed down through generations, carrying family hopes and history. However, following the industrial revolution, the rapid development of the textile and manufacturing industries, globalization, and consumerism gave rise to fast fashion, prioritizing speed and efficiency over craftsmanship. In the performance, a combination of objects, music, scent, and movement engages the viewer's senses. Through the performer's movements, the elements of "awakening," "growth," "recovery," "confrontation," and "absorption" are interpreted. At the end, the audience is invited to interact with the performers through plants and flowers distributed upon entry. The act of giving is viewed as a poetic gesture, and the performers' act of receiving marks the conclusion of the performance.
